BRAVE THE RECESSES OF YOUR JUNK DRAWER. Reach past the dust bunnies and USOs
(unidentifiable stored objects) and you’re bound to find old keys. Rikki Ansell of
Fredericksburg, Virginia, unlocked our challenge with this jangly lamp shade. Not
able to scrounge up a lot of keys around the house? Seek out a locksmith or a hardware
store for castoffs.
Lamp base (Make sure it is sturdy enough to
support the weight of the finished shade.)
Lamp shade
Hardware cloth and wire
Keys
Paper clips
(Note: The amount of hardware cloth and the
number of keys and paper clips you need depends
on the size of your shade.)

Tape measure
1. REMOVE THE SHADE WRAP from the
shade frame.
2. MEASURE THE CIRCUMFERENCE of the
frame and cut the hardware cloth to length.
3. MEASURE THE HEIGHT of the frame and
trim the hardware cloth to leave an extra
2 inches on the top and the bottom.
4. LAY THE HARDWARE CLOTH on a flat
surface and wrap it around the shade frame.
5. FOLD THE EXTRA CLO TH under the bottom
of the frame, and repeat along the top of the
frame. Thread wire along the seam to close
and secure the shade.
6. TO AT TACH THE KEYS, feed a paper clip
through the back of a key hole. Then hang
the paper clip on the hardware cloth. If
necessary, bend and brace the paper clip on
the inside of the shade to secure. Repeat.
7. TO AT TACH THE TOP RO W OF KE YS, thread
a short piece of wire through each key hole
and wire the keys to the top of the shade.
