1. Prep the pieces
Pair the shanty cap with a duct cap (look
for both in the heating and cooling aisle of
hardware stores and home centers) or a
cake pan. We used a 4-inch shanty cap with
an 8-inch duct cap, but you can vary the
sizes. Prime and paint the pieces. Let dry.
2. Assemble the feeder
Don your safety glasses. Use a metal bit to
drill a hole in the top center of the shanty
cap. Insert an eyebolt through the hole and
secure underneath with a nut. If desired,
also drill small holes in the bottom of the
duct cap or pan to allow for drainage. Glue
the bottom of the shanty cap to the inside
center of the duct cap or cake pan. Let dry.
3. Hang
Cut the rope or twine to the desired length,
loop it through the eyebolt, and tie a knot
to hold it in place. Trim the tail or wire it to
the hanging rope. Hang the feeder from a
branch. Fill the feeding platform with seed.

1. Cut and appliqué
Cut the quilt batting into three pieces that are
57∕ 8 inches wide. Stack the batting, and place the
fabric for the front on top of it. Cut the collage pieces,
using the Flower Template and diagrams as a guide.
Arrange the collage pieces on the front fabric. Sew
around the outline of the ower, going through all
layers. Cut a circle from felt and sew it to the ower
center, stitching to form a spiral design. Sew the
ribbon, pot holder, and patch in place.
2. Assemble the pot holder
Align the appliquéd front piece with the back
piece of fabric, wrong sides together. Use a sewing
machine to zigzag stitch and then straight stitch
around the edges. For the loop, fold the bias tape in
half lengthwise and sew the overlapped bottoms to
the top le corner of the pot holder.
